I’ve been working my way through the final edit of my book even faster than I’d hoped. Over the three-day weekend, I found myself actually wanting to work on it rather than forcing myself. But that leaves me with a larger dilemma looming: the cover.
I don’t have the artistic ability to make a cover myself; I know that for sure. I can draw well enough to have some fun with it, but not with the amount of polish that I want for this project. That leaves me with two options: hire an artist or use AI art.
From a legal standpoint, AI art would be fine for commercial use, according to my research. It would certainly be simpler, assuming I don’t want anything too specific. But from a moral standpoint, I’m not sure I can be ok with it. I’ve heard too much about how AI is incorporating actual artists’ works into its database without their permission. As an artist myself, I should support other artists.
That leaves me with the stressful task of locating and hiring the RIGHT artist. I find that prospect vaguely terrifying. In the spirit of holding myself accountable, I will report back with progress.
